Privacy Features for Registrations

When registering a domain, you have a choice between Standard Privacy and Enhanced Privacy. What does this mean?

Let's say you register standardprivacy.avax and enhancedprivacy.avax, with Standard and Enhanced Privacy, respectively. Below we will cover various examples to show the implications of these registrations.

Someone I don't know is looking at my wallet.

What does this observer see in my wallet?

  • The observer will see you have standardprivacy.avax in your wallet.
  • The observer will see you have another registered domain, but won't know what it is.

This is one of the main advantages of Enhanced Privacy.

I'm listing my domain name for auction on an NFT exchange.

Does my domain name show up on the exchange?

  • standardprivacy.avax will show up on the NFT exchange. Users will be able to properly see the domain name.
  • The Enhanced Privacy name will not show up properly. Users will see a name listed on the exchange, but won't know what it is.

Enhanced Privacy does not work well for NFT exchanges.

I use my wallet on multiple different computers.

Will my domain name work properly?

  • standardprivacy.avax will show without a problem.
  • enhancedprivacy.avax will be hidden, unless you reveal it. If you forget the name, it will not be revealed. As long as you can recall that you registered enhancedprivacy.avax, there is no problem.

I want to use reverse resolution.

Reverse resolution is the process of taking a piece of information like a wallet address, and displaying a human-readable identifier. For example, in a long list of wallet addresses, reverse resolution could mark yours as standardprivacy.avax, making the list easier to read.

  • standardprivacy.avax will show without a problem.
  • enhancedprivacy.avax will not work with reverse resolution.

How does Enhanced Privacy work?

Read our full blog post on how the Enhanced Privacy mechanism works. For Standard Privacy, we the preimage of the hash is published to a smart contract & afterwards, we can query that contract using the hash, to fetch the preimage.
